John Oliver on Singapore’s World Cup gambling ad backfire
Comedian John Oliver has followed up his FIFA rant with another football related bit on his US show ‘Last Week Tonight’ looking at Singapore’s backfiring anti-gambling ad campaign that aired during the World Cup.
Singapore’s National Council on Problem Gambling released an ad during the World Cup based on a fictional story where a boy laments his father betting his life savings on Germany winning the World Cup.
A slight back fire on a well-intentioned ad, given that Germany as we all know went on to become World Champions.
After the ad Oliver cries “yeah but Germany won kid! Your dad’s the greatest!” and then explains that the organisation did make a second ad saying that the kid’s father always wants to bet one more time.
