Didier Drogba made his first appearance in the MLS for new side Montreal Impact last night, defeating a strong Chicago Fire team 4-3. In true Drogba fashion, he introduced himself in just about the best way possible; a perfect hat-trick.

Drogba’s first goal came from a lovely, early cross from Nigel Reo-Coker. His first touch was exquisite, shrugging off Eric Gehrig and bringing the ball down on the turn before prodding the ball past Sean Johnson in the Chicago goal. He looked hungry for more.

However, it was Chicago who struck next. Harry Shipp won a penalty which Jeff Larentowicz dispatched confidently. Montreal went back in front just 6 minutes later, as Wandrille Lefevre snuck in at the back post to head home a corner that Johnson couldn’t get a hand to. The goals continued – it took just 2 minutes for the Fire to be level once again. This time Gilberto slotted in after good work from his strike partner Kennedy Igboananike.

This time it was Chicago who took the lead – Igboananike rose highest from a corner to head his side 3-2 in front on 58 minutes. However, their lead didn’t last long either. Just two minutes later Drogba hammered the ball into the top right corner from a quick free-kick, leaving Johnson with no chance. Drogba finished the scoring for the night by completing his perfect hat-trick. Callum Mallace whipped a perfect ball in which found Drogba totally unmarked in the box. His volley was matched by Johnson, who pulled off a stunning reaction save, but unfortunately for him the power behind the shot knocked him backward into the goal and Drogba had the simple task of following up and nodding the ball into an empty net.

And that was how it finished. An entertaining game that was no doubt won by Drogba. He proved he still has plenty of appetite for the game, and Montreal fans will be eagerly awaiting their next match to see if the ex-Chelsea man can score again. He had his doubters when the move was announced, but those who said he was past his prime will be swallowing their words right now. He certainly did it in England with Chelsea, and it looks like he’s going to do it again here in the US. If you think you are the next Drogba and could make it in the Premier League then why not check out some UK Football trials, where you could be spotted by clubs like Chelsea.
