    Unmarked near the penalty spot, Xavi strokes home a first-timer, much to the delight to the few people that showed up.

    Al-Sadd went on to draw the game 2-2 with Umm Salal.

    Liverpool earned a respecful 1-1 draw in their opening Europa League match with Bordeaux on Thursday evening in France. Adam Lallana had given Liverpool the lead with a quality finish, before Jussie equalised for Bordeaux.

    Danny Ings, making a rare appearance as a striker could have given Liverpool their second goal only to be thwarted at close range by the keeper.

    Speaking after the game, Brendan Rodgers came up with a new ‘Brendanism’ to add to the collection, with his reason for Ings’ miss: “His second touch was too good” scoffed the Northern Irishmen.

    That remark goes right up there alongside “if anything he’s hit that too well” in hallowed football cliches.

    Top stuff Brendan.

    Brendan Rodgers had set sail for Liverpool’s Europa League clash in Bordeaux with a squad predominately made up of youngsters the names of which are you yet to be learnt.

    After Mignolet had injured Kolo Toure, then, just for good measure trodden on the centre back, Liverpool were forced to bring on Pedro Chirivella making the average age of the players on the field a shade over 21.

    However, it was a more experienced player in Adam Lallana who brought the game out of it’s slumber in the second half. Lallana picked up the ball just outside the box, nutmegged an on rushing defender before tucking the ball away with aplomb.

    Liverpool were unable to hold on to their lead, and after some indecision in defence Bordeaux equalised through Jussie.

    But being pitch side while footballers warm up is a perilous place to be, as numerous pundits have found out in the past. On this occasion, a cheeky Ryan Giggs was lurking in the shadows, and decided to cause a bit of mischief with his pals by curling a ball in the direction of Paul Scholes.

    Expect these kinds of shenanigans to be a thing of the past if clubs follow Chelsea’s lead and put a ban on banter.

    Thomas Muller’s opening goal that set Bayern Munich on their way to a 3-0 win over Olympiakos came with a fairly generous slice of luck.

    Muller at first appeared to have scored a sublime lob during Bayern’s opening Champions League group match on Wednesday evening. But, speaking after the game Muller admitted he was attempting a cross for Robert Lewandowski: “I have to be honest and say the ball bobbled slightly before the opening goal. It was a little bit lucky but very important for us.”

    Well, we might just have found our goal of the season. With Roma a goal down to Barcelona in their opening Champions League group match, thanks to Luis Suarez’ goal line header, Alessandro Florenzi took to extremes to get his side on level terms.

    Stationed out on the right wing just inside opposition territory, Florenzi spotted Barcelona keeper Marce-Andre Ter Stegen off his line and decided, sure, why not have a pop.

    A stunned state of disbelief then descended on Ter Stegen, as Florenz’s outrageous lob nestled into the back of net, kissing the post on it’s way in.

    Unfortunately for Kilkenny and Preston, his stunning strike would only earn them a draw after Kieran Agard equalised in the last few minutes of the game.
