Keeper clanger sets up Portland MLS Cup win vs Columbus

    Steve-Clark-clanger-Columbus-Portland
Gegenpressing has officially arrived in the MLS!

Columbus Crew keeper Steve Clark conceded a real clanger during his sides 2-1 MLS Cup final loss to the Portland Timbers. Keepers always long for the much heralded early touch, but Clark couldn’t have asked for a worse start, after his attempt to hoof a ball up field rebounded off Portland’s Diego Valeri and into the net with just 27 seconds on the clock, the quickest goal in MLS Cup history.

For those new to soccer in the country, the MLS Cup serves as the finale to a four-round knockout competition, one that is hotly contested between the top six teams from the two conferences of the league. In many ways, the Cup serves as a bragging right for the winning club to call themselves the best team in elite-tier men’s soccer in the whole of United States and Canada. It is no secret that Cup Winners also attract a lot of new fans every year. The knock-on effect can be seen in the the increase in game day seats and even sale of paraphernalia ranging from team jersey to mls flags and everything in between.

Columbus Crew, one of the ten charter clubs of the league when it began in 1996 was itself founded a couple years earlier. Their stadium, the Columbus Crew stadium was the first of its kind in the United States – exclusively designed for soccer. Founded in 2009, Portland Timbers in contrast, are more recent addition to growing MLS club fraternity. In recent times, they have made inroads to top spots in both the Eastern Conference as well as MLS league standings.

Fans who chose Portland Timbers players in their FanDuel Fantasy Soccer team all cheered for joy when they heard the final whistle blow on the final game of the MLS Cup. They played very well and deserved the win, working hard the entire game to keep in front and secure themselves the victory.

It’s exactly this kind of exciting, daring and edge of the seat stuff that forced Louis van Gaal to ship James Wilson out on loan. Until he learns to keep such exuberance under control, and tones it down a bit, he can expect to be kept a far and safe distance from the 1st team squad.

    Pick. That. Out

The only thing that could possibly make this thunderbastard from Benfica’s Renato Sanches any better would be if the teenager did it on his debut.

And, guess what? This was Sanches debut.

Plucky Chelsea now aiming for lofty top 6 finish says Jose Mourinho

After suffering their 8th defeat of the season following the 1-0 loss to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Jose Mourinho’s relegation scrappers Chelsea have softened their ambitions for the season.

Speaking after the defeat, Mourinho looking like a man in need of solid uninterrupted 24 hours of sleep, claimed a top six finish was now the more likely target for Chelsea.

Beyond the top 6 target, Mourinho made the usual pointy fingers at the ref as well as making a somewhat coded suggesting that not all of the personalities were up for the scrap. Now who could he be referring to? We’re looking at you Diego.

Paulo Dybala worthy of the hype after sensational strike for Juventus

    Woof indeed!

Hype around Paulo Dybala has been steadily building having drawn comparisons to fellow Argentine Sergio Aguero and after making a great start to filling the Carlos Tevez shaped hole in Juventus’ front line since his move from Palermo.

On Friday evening Dybala further justified the hype with a stunning goal for Juventus during their 2-0 win over Lazio. Picking up the ball outside the box, Dybala flicks the ball up, juggles it before casually lashing home into the bottom corner.

    Watch Dybala’s brilliant effort below.

A Spanish third division side are fully taking the piss out of Real Madrid who have been chucked out of the Copa del Rey after fielding a suspended player.

Merida, who take on Cadiz – the side Madrid were playing when they committed the blunder – have tied up suspended player Johnatan Monago Vila just to make absolutely sure they don’t fall to the same fate as Real.

You never can be too careful. Top work Merida. Watch the video below.

Such is the dearth of insightful and entertaining pundits occupying our screens, Gary Neville’s surprise departure to Valencia during the week has left viewers in a withered state of national mourning.

And what better way to help the mourning process than to watch nostalgic clips of his best bits as a pundit.

Enjoy the video above. Hopefully Neville will be back in the summer, sporting a healthy bronze glow, ready to pick where he left off.

Krisztian Nemeth wins MLS goal of the year with solo beauty for Kansas

Twisting this way and that, Sporting Kansas City forward Krisztian Nemeth has won the MLS goal of the year with a fine solo effort vs Portland following a fan vote.

Not a bad effort, but my personal favourite goes to Toronto FC’s Giovinco for this superb individual goal.
