Adam Lallana’s classy goal earns Liverpool draw vs Bordeaux

Brendan Rodgers had set sail for Liverpool’s Europa League clash in Bordeaux with a squad predominately made up of youngsters the names of which are you yet to be learnt.

After Mignolet had injured Kolo Toure, then, just for good measure trodden on the centre back, Liverpool were forced to bring on Pedro Chirivella making the average age of the players on the field a shade over 21.

However, it was a more experienced player in Adam Lallana who brought the game out of it’s slumber in the second half. Lallana picked up the ball just outside the box, nutmegged an on rushing defender before tucking the ball away with aplomb.

Liverpool were unable to hold on to their lead, and after some indecision in defence Bordeaux equalised through Jussie.

Thomas Muller’s opening goal that set Bayern Munich on their way to a 3-0 win over Olympiakos came with a fairly generous slice of luck.

Muller at first appeared to have scored a sublime lob during Bayern’s opening Champions League group match on Wednesday evening. But, speaking after the game Muller admitted he was attempting a cross for Robert Lewandowski: “I have to be honest and say the ball bobbled slightly before the opening goal. It was a little bit lucky but very important for us.”

Well, we might just have found our goal of the season. With Roma a goal down to Barcelona in their opening Champions League group match, thanks to Luis Suarez’ goal line header, Alessandro Florenzi took to extremes to get his side on level terms.

Stationed out on the right wing just inside opposition territory, Florenzi spotted Barcelona keeper Marce-Andre Ter Stegen off his line and decided, sure, why not have a pop.

A stunned state of disbelief then descended on Ter Stegen, as Florenz’s outrageous lob nestled into the back of net, kissing the post on it’s way in.

  • “I’m not in hell, I’m not in heaven” Mourinho left in purgatory after Chelsea win

“I’m not in hell, I’m not in heaven” Mourinho left in purgatory after Chelsea win

Chelsea put recent poor displays in the Premier League behind them in what was a comfortable 4-0 win over Maccabi in their opening Champions League group match.

Goals from Willian, Oscar, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas made for a pretty one sided affair at Stamford Bridge. However, speaking after the game, a pragmatic Jose Mourinho with his fate still in the hands of the man upstairs shrugged: “I was not in hell with bad results, and I am not now in heaven because we won.”

Mourinho’s fate might become clearer when Chelsea play Arsenal on the weekend.

“I say it’s a red card and penalty, I’m a bad loser” LvG reacts to Luke Shaw’s leg break

During Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Dutch champions PSV in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, Luke Shaw suffered an horrific leg break after a tackle by Hector Moreno.

The incident made for gruesome viewing as you could clearly see Shaw’s lower leg literally dangling at an angle that it never should.

Speaking after United’s loss, Louis van Gaal looked visibly upset as he confirmed that Shaw had a double fracture.

  • “They were lucky” Yaya Toure sour after Man City’s latest failure in Europe

“They were lucky” Yaya Toure sour after Man City’s latest failure in Europe

Speaking after Manchester City’s 2-1 home defeat to Juventus in their opening Champions League group stage game, a dejected Yaya Toure was once again having to deflect some tough questions on City’s inadequacies in Europe.

“I Think they’ve been luck today” grumbled Toure referring to Juventus’ comeback. Adding “We didn’t play so bad.”

Unfortunately for Toure “not playing so bad” rarely gets you the three points. Juventus were simply the better finishers on the night, producing two quality goals from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata.

Toure, however did admit that City need to learn in Europe. The problem is, you would expect them to have learnt a little more by now.

  • Man City’s Patrick Roberts scores fantastic solo goal vs Juventus in the UEFA Youth League

Man City’s Patrick Roberts scores fantastic solo goal vs Juventus in the UEFA Youth League

Manchester City suffered a disappointing outing in the Champions League once again this evening. Having gone 1-0 up vs last years finalist, City were left with nothing to show for their efforts at the Eithad after two quality goals from Juventus.

For those Manchester City fans feeling a little glum, perhaps Patrick Roberts’ stunning solo goal in UEFA’s youth league will help pep up spirits.

Roberts, a summer acquisition from Fulham and one to keep an eye for the future, picks up the ball near the right wing and then waltzes through the Juventus defence before expertly tucking away his effort.

Manchester City went on to win the game comfortably 4-1.
