From the vault: 18-year-old Julian Joachim with an outrageous outside of the boot finish

With the ‘magic of the cup’ upon this weekend, reminiscing over a Julian Joachim wonder goal seemed like a good way of getting in the mood for FA Cup football.

The goal in question came in a third round replay against Barnsley at Filbert street in 1993. Joachim, who had just broken on to the scene for Leicester, ran from his own half before nonchalantly chipping the keeper with an audacious outside of the boot finish.

“18-years-old and the World at his feet” proclaimed the commentator after Joachim’s exquisite goal. Proving that even 20 odd years ago, commentators were no less hyperbolic when it came to describing the latest English youngster to make his mark.

    Watch Joachim’s beauty below.

Espanyol keeper figures out controversial way of stopping Lionel Messi

    Lopez-stamp-messi
I call this the “Stamp on a player when no one is looking, but make it look like you’re just casually getting up” technique. Admittedly the name of the technique needs work, it needs to be more snappy. Huh, Snappy! That will do, The Snappy!

Espanyol’s keeper Pau Lopez tried to administer the Snappy during his sides Copa del Rey clash with Barcelona. Unfortunately for Lopez, who must be an amateur when it comes to using the Snappy, failed miserably and here is how. 1. He gives away his intentions with a knowing look at the limb he is about to stamp on, thus completely undermining the idea of making it look like a casual, honest mistake. 2. By targeting one of the World’s best player, Lopez guaranteed that many, many people would indeed be looking. 3. If you insist on apply the Snappy on the oppoistions best player, probably a good idea to do it before he scores a stunning free kick against you.

Watch Lopez’ failed attempt at the Snappy below.

Rafa Benitez sacking would have happened sooner if not for screaming kids

If you were one of the many people complaining that Real Madrid hadn’t shown enough patience and pulled the trigger to quickly after sacking Rafa Benitez yesterday, you’d be wrong.

Oh Hatem, all you had to do was finish it off!!

Hatem Ben Arfa glimpsed greatness, if only for a couple of seconds, after almost pulling off what would have been one of the finest solo goals.

A trim Ben Arfa playing for Nice during their cup tie with Rennes, danced round several defenders before squaring up the keeper only to be cruelly denied as he pulled the trigger by a recovering defender.

Zinedine Zidane ‘heads’ for the Real Madrid hot seat after Rafa is axed

So, after just 7 months Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has wield the axe once again and his given Rafa Benitez the chop with Zinedine Zidane taking over.

Benitez took charge of only 25 matches winning 17, drawing 5 and losing 3 while sitting 3rd in La Liga. A good record, but one that won over few admirers as demonstrated by Real Madrid fans booing Benitez name as it was announced over the PA during a recent clash with Real Sociedad.

Zidane, from head butt to head coach.

After being unveiled by Perez, Zidane took to the stand to speak for the first time as Real Madrid manager: “This is an important day for me” soothed a sharp looking Zidane dressed in a blue tailored suit, adding “I’m more excited now than I was on the day I signed as a player”

Lets see if that excitement continues once the boo boys come out once again.

From the vault: 11 years ago today Roy Carroll escapes clanger vs Spurs

    RoyCarroll_clanger-Spurs
Over a decade has now past since Man United keeper Roy Carroll got away with what was a clear goal after inexplicably dropping a long range effort from Tottenham’s Pedro Mendes over the line.

To look back at the Carroll clanger that happened on the 4th of January 2001, it’s now astonishing to think that once upon a time goal line technology was treated with element of suspicion as the football authorities resisted technology rather than encouraging it. It would take until the 2013-14 season before goal line technology was eventually introduced to the Premier League.

For the first time since 1963-64 season, West Ham completed a league home and away double over Liverpool. And they did it at a canter having comfortably beaten Liverpool 2-0 at Upton Park.

Speaking after the game, a visibly angry Klopp lamented his sides performance who for all their possession registered just one shot on target all game.
