England 2-0 Switzerland – Wayne Rooney makes history

It may have taken another dodgy penalty call, but Wayne Rooney has now become England’s leading all time goal scorer with 50 goals. And counting.

In what had been a pretty dull affair at Wembley, the game looked to be shaping up for a bore draw played at an ever decreasing pace. Then Harry Kane came off the bench in the 67th minute to tuck away a smart finish and give England the lead and a lift.

Throughout the game, Rooney had huffed and puffed, and his desire to get his 50th England goal was abundantly evident as he at times looked to force the matter. However, with little over five minutes of the game left, Rooney’s time finally came after Raheem Sterling won a soft penalty.

With his name echoing around Wembley before he had even put the ball on the spot, Rooney kept his nerve and fired home an emphatic penalty – the burden finally lifted.

Rooney may divide opinion, but what ever you may think of him, 50 England goals is a remarkable achievement. The question now is how many can Rooney go on to score?
